Moko Jumbie 1990, 15 mins.
Slices of life in New York City. A short film. The name means “dancing spirit” and these 12’ high stilt walkers appear at street festivals in New York City, at carnivals in the Caribbean, and at religious ceremonies in West Africa. Because of their great height they are seen as all-powerful figures to be revered. This lively film shows the art, craft, dance, and history of the Moko Jumbie. Filmed in Nigeria, the Virgin Islands, and the streets of New York, the film is both entertaining and informative.
